As I say time and time again, the essence of Black Metal is how atmospheric it can sound. How cold, dark, melodic or combative. That those characteristic elements of semiology, of symbolism, all qualities of this genre that contributes so much to the Metal universe, are always present. And this happens with RIMRUNA, a German duo featuring Hiverfroid on drums and Wintergrimm on guitar and vocals. Two exceptional musicians who are capable of conjuring a music that transports us to the very origins of the flagship Black Metal bands. When listening to it, one traverses the cold forests, the northern mountains, the melancholy, the agony, the spirit of war of bands like BATHORY, IMMORTAL or ENSLAVED, just to name three. The songs are what one expects from a band of this style. They fit perfectly into the band’s very structure. Typically long songs, loaded with somber passages, lugubrious landscapes, a constant emotional back and forth in which the music is what matters most. Everything here is made to immerse the mind in the cold and misty forests of the Berlin night. And the band’s whole thematic approach leads to those same places and that same mysticism. RIMRUNA is a band born to worship the night and the moon. The fog and the forest. A band born for the nocturnal ritual. To raise a cry of anguish and melancholy while death lurks behind. There are not many bands of this kind for me. They are a spiritual trance. An immersion into deep consciousness. A look into pain. The clear warning of the end of the stars. I have nothing more to say. I have already said it all. My mind is no longer the same after listening to this album. Let’s take our swords, our axes, our maces to the forest and watch the night fall.
