THAUMATURGY is a one man band from Kansas, United States playing cavernous Death Metal. I have to say THAUMATURGY makes an excellent first impression with “Charnel Gnosis”, the opener ‘Aeon Of Decay’ is a 7 minute track that dwelves directly into muddy areas of the genre with little to no regard for the clean. Sound wise, I’d say a close associate is FOSSILIZATION but THAUMATURGY adds in Black Metal approach to their riffs, particularly in the way the tracks are built up, a recurring theme in all tracks on this EP. It certainly gives a good view into the entire cavernous Death Metal movement, I know we’ve had a lot of these bands that favor tape releases and some days it gets tough to differentiate one from another. There isn’t such an issue here, THAUMATURGY borrows elements from early INCANTATION and leans into the Scandinavian approach of riffing that produces a rather discomforting sound that sticks with you. I like what I’m hearing here, the vocals don’t stray through the 30 minutes, the guitars add in the necessary melodic edge to the heaviness. In all honesty, I could do with better recorded drumming but well, I suppose the overall sound demands what we hear here. No, it might not be on your year-end lists for comparison but THAUMATURGY certainly have put out a good first release that needs to be checked out by fans of both Death and Black Metal for sure.
