From the ancient and sacred soil of Athens, Greece, TRIUMPHER came out with their third full length offering, “Piercing The Heart Of The World”. Following the impact of their 2023 debut “Storming The Walls” and the furious drama of 2024’s “Spirit Invictus”, this quintet which is led by Mars Triumph on vocals, alongside guitarists Christopher Tsakiropoulos and Mario Ñ Peters, bassist Stelios Zoumis and drummer Agis Tzoukopoulos, now got firmer with time and their experiences. The opener ‘Black Blood’ suggests this progression immediately, as it introduces a lyrical focus on the “archetype of completion” and the sacred heights of Mount Taygetus. The musical partnership within the band is undeniably solid, anchoring the record with a powerful blend of epic Heavy Metal infused with subtle Black Metal elements. Tracks like ‘The Mountain Throne’ and ‘Erynies’ showcase their dynamic capability, with their epic capability of transitioning from heroic like openings into furious second wave Black Metal styles reminiscent of EMPEROR’s symphonic grandness and overwhelming darkness. On the contrary, ‘Destroyer’ will give away the feeling of being exposed to something brutal and wild which sonically tells of Ares and his hatred driven scorching of the earth. It’s heavy, fullest of hatred and wrath, and possibly poised to break many necks in their future live performances. Thematically, the record is a deep and soulful descent into Hellenic philosophy and Homeric classics. The 10-minute closing ‘Naus Apidalia’, alongside ‘Ithaca (Return Of The Eternal King)’ draws directly from the Odyssey, serving as a musical vessel for the journey and return of the “Eternal King”. Mars Triumph’s vocal performance is a force of nature, spreading melodies that widen jaws with crystal clarity. While his high pitch range on ‘Ithaca’ evokes the solo work of Bruce Dickinson (from his 1998 classic, “The Chemical Wedding”), his broader delivery carries the muscular spirit of Eric Adams of MANOWAR. The production maintains a powerful, organic edge that captures the band’s matured sound without succumbing to trends. By the time the final notes of the Homeric suite fade, a sense of some artistic triumph like journey is fully realized. Heightening the battle hardened-till-triumphant atmosphere is the striking cover artwork by Anastasia Ziazopoulou, featuring the golden horned deer of Artemis – telling the tale of a traditional folk prophecy of rebirth. So, if you prefer your Metal forged in ancient fires with blending the heroism of PRIMORDIAL, “Piercing The Heart Of The World” is a record to dive deeper with. With so many bands coming out with thousands of releases every year, it surely nowadays is hard to make a difference and remain memorable. It is very easy now to create and release music, but surely authenticity is the thing that makes the difference at the end. These Greek heavy hitters kept on doing that by simply playing what they wanted without massive fusses around. Aided with their inspiration and focus on ancient literature, civilization and mythology, TRIUMPHER is becoming a force that is on the path to earn many more close followings and praises.
