The Canadian A.M.S.G. are around for quite a while now, since 2007 to be more precise. The three piece released two EPs and two full lengths to date, with “Hostis Universi Generis” as the second and most recent one. This album I have to deal with might receive some good to great reaction in the underground and maybe even in major magazines. “Hostis Universi Generis” is pretty progressive and it broadens the horizons of Black Metal for sure, since some of the instrumentation is unusual and even unique. Six long to very long songs are featured on this album and they present some acoustic parts, piano and even saxophone interludes. But this is just one side of the coin. The other side is the fact that this album sounds pretty botchy and rather uninspired. It just inspires me to write a not so nice review on an album that is neither fish nor fowl. AD MAJOREM SATANAE GLORIAM (that is what the abbreviation stands for) to me is one of these bands that are willing, yet unable to compose something thrilling and exciting. As much as I like good Black Metal, I dislike A.M.S.G., for “Hostis Universi Generis” knows how to pass me by without leaving any impression. OK, some of the more harmonic guitar parts are not bad, a few faster outbreaks are okay with me as well, but this is absolutely not enough.
