Atmospheric Post Black Metal! ANOMALIE is an Austrian one-man band that sees Chris Marrok as its sole member and on all instruments, although since the 2015 album “Refugium” we also see the presence of Lukas Schlintl on drums. “Riverchild”, the band’s fifth full-length, is released as its predecessors by AOP Records – a German label capable of grouping the best bands that Central Europe has to offer in terms of Post Black Metal, with HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY and HERETOIR in primis. Indeed, in addition to sharing the label, ANOMALIE also share obvious sonic similarities, especially with the former. “Riverchild” is definitely a very sophisticated sounding album and the result of a careful and meticulous study of every aspect of sound. Nothing is left to chance. This album has the merit of offering the most experimental thing that can be sought nowadays by those who seek contamination and experimentation in extreme music and in Black Metal specifically. In the course of “Riverchild” we can appreciate atmospheric, acoustic and folk passages, clean singing and melodies with a common thread that is, however, indebted to the extreme. A further highly appreciable element is the ability of “Riverchild” to result as a melodic journey that will make you appreciate feelings of excellent atmospheric Black Metal. And indeed, despite reaching almost an hour in length, the album flows really well! In the opinion of the writer, “Riverchild” perfectly represents what a certain type of more experimental Metal should be like in 2024 – roots firmly anchored in their influences to try to experiment and innovate without distorting or falling into modernities that have nothing to do with Metal. Definitely recommended to those who are not afraid of more modern sounds even in the Black Metal sphere.
