CATALEPTIC
The Tragedy

“The Tragedy” is the third full length by CATALEPTIC, a Finnish Death / Doom juggernaut. Released by F.D.A. Records, “The Tragedy” brings together a wide range of sonic elements. As a fan of Doom Metal, I have to say this album is actually a challenge. The vocals are harsh and delivered with absolute certainty every single time. The rhythm isn’t necessarily Doom’ish, to me it’s a healthy mix of Post-Metal as well, particularly the rhythm section. I have to say the production of this album is excellent! Every instrument is given an adequate space and the rhythm section just springs to life in every track. I really enjoy these parts, as seen on the second half of ‘Disarmed. Disowned. Betrayed’. This isn’t necessarily the music you’d go to war with but it fills the room enough to engulf the light. ‘Whipped To Drudgery’ keeps up the momentum, a simple mid-paced harmony with ferocious vocals, at 3:08 it is the shortest track on the album. As you listen to more, you realise, a few edits here and there could actually help the band. Not every song needs to be north of the 5 minute mark every time. CATALEPTIC keeps you interested initially but their message slowly wears off in lengthy tracks. I’m also wondering about how this would play out in a live setting and I’m on the fence about it. On the whole, the melodies are beautiful even though short with the whole song built around them like track #4 ‘Lost’, the rhythm is strong and the band marches on with no second thoughts. Fans of melodic Doom Metal (DAYLIGHT DIES, SATURNUS etc) should definitely check this out. It isn’t a groundbreaking, path laying album, but surely a good companion alongside.
