Spectral Intercession

COFFIN MULCH is the new king of Death Metal groups from Scotland that the current Metal scene could have asked for. There are many compelling elements in the dose of classics from AUTOPSY to ENTOMBED that are masterfully merged into their debut album, entitled “Spectral Intercession”. The brilliant noise from the abyss, such as tortured screams, unrelenting and memorable buzzing guitar riffs, mad guitar solos, doomy atmosphere that creeps, gut-wrenching bass tone and solid drum attacks, is what this Scottish Death Metal gang offers to the uninitiated. In short, a morbid Death Metal executed in the old way without overplaying their roots. If the listeners walk down the alley in the shadow of the “Spectral Intercession”, a total standout performance of rotting Scottish is what you can expect. The first two songs, ‘Spectral Intercession’, including one of their singles, ‘Into The Blood’, are like wandering further into the endless labyrinth of death. Here, they are able to deliver the infectious hooks that are perfectly blended with the psychotic howl. What a better way to write an album opener with an eerie screaming like the inevitable album “Left Hand Path.” A stinking soundscape of total morbidity with so much dynamic intensity is a gateway to hearing more of their debut sonical assault. The sonic savagery continues with ‘Mental Suicide’ and ‘In The Grip Of Death’. A gloomier moment appears when the third song takes the wheel. The atmosphere of doom that was meant to grow deep in the darkness brings reflection in a way that allows their shift to have its own greatness. Particularly when the old school death-beat drumming aggression starts to crush the next pace. The warmongering song comes in at the right time, when the listeners have their moment to be obliterated by utterly putrid Death Metal. Combative drumming drives the adrenaline and the classic buzzsaw guitar sound towards a significant spotlight. This fourth track is the shortest song composition, but it will only leave the listeners in eternal claustrophobia. The auditory pulverization keeps on marching with another single, ‘Fall Of Gaia’ and their sixth merciless soundscape, ‘Gateway To The Unseen’. Borrowing the boundless source from the classic ENTOMBED, the intro to the fifth attack is very venomous and lethal for the faint-hearted. Yet despite being minimalist in its structure – the shredding and solo style – COFFIN MULCH totally delivers on summoning the undead listeners to kill those faint-hearted. The room to explore the wilderness of their debut opus is piling up on the following song ‘Gateway To The Unseen’. There is a certain unique and distinct riffage that is quite easy to notice. It features some amazing crawling guitars that emanate towards the end of this sixth offering. There, they are furthering and likely refining the idea that Death Metal realms are limitless. Onward to the last two songs of COFFIN MULCH’s first album, ‘Infernal Mass’ and ‘Eternal Enslavement’. They are breeding another monolithic atmosphere on the seventh track. The band seems to never leave expectations of the listeners falling into the same hole. There is always a fascinating shape shifting between songs, this one included. The catchiness is always there, waiting to be summoned. What’s more interesting to digest about this album is that they know exactly how to end good things. After getting beaten up by gruesome music and walking through an interminable force beyond death, the listeners finally embrace a powerful closing through ‘Eternal Enslavement’. The album is also wrapped in an unspeakable landscape from the mind of artist Brad Moore, who only gives a spine-chilling feeling when seeing the cover art at first glance. That being said, the debut album from COFFIN MULCH is an exquisite package, both musically and aesthetically, to accompany your morbid days. In conclusion, despite the fact that there are and will be countless extreme groups that take the same influences to fruition, “Spectral Intercession” is simply not a retrospective trend that will only oversaturate the death metal scene.
