The Last Companion

DENOMINATION is a new band to my ears. When asked to do a review on this, their latest release coming from F.D.A. Records, I thought I would give them a go. Mainly I said yes to the opportunity because of the excellent mood-inducing cover art. Yeah, I’m a sucker for that type of thing. So imagine my welcome surprise to get a band that has a strong feeling of FLESHCRAWL. There is also a heavy helping of DISMEMBER and a bit of BENEDICTION, primarily because of the vocals. Vocalist Oliver Heil has a deeper guttural sound similar to Dave Ingram. Along with the above-mentioned bands, there is also an inkling of a d-beat / Crust approach in some of the songs. The production is on point for the band’s interpretation of the HM-2-driven sound. The guitars have that fuzzy crunch and the bass and drums contribute a warm bottom end to the overall approach. Obviously, with this genre and the plethora of bands doing this type of approach, there is nothing groundbreaking here. It all comes down to songwriting and what you are looking for in particular. Or even just how much of a die hard you are for this latest take on the Swedeath sound. 12 songs and just a tad over that sweet spot of 30 minutes, all songs are straight and to the point. Not too much nuance to speak of, so suffice it to say a very straight meat and potatoes type of release. www.facebook.com/nastyhm2tone, www.facebook.com/fdarec
