If you see the name Johan Langquist you’ll immediately associate it with CANDLEMASS and especially with his iconic voice on the classic “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus”, along with his return and control of the CANDLEMASS vocals department since 2018. But here, with a band like JOHAN LANGQUIST THE CASTLE, he steps away from that to embark on a journey with a new project. Originally released digitally in 2024 on a set of singles, the album is now getting a physical release through I Hate Records, marking the start of a new adventure for Langquist as he branches out on his own. “Johan Langquist The Castle” incorporates elements of classic Heavy Metal, Doom and Hard Rock, resulting in an album that celebrates the past, while still feeling new, brave and fresh. And yes, you may find very familiar sounds here. While listening to it, it took my mind to bands like DAVID GILMOUR, OZZY OSBOURNE, DIO or YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, just to reference bands with a “solo project” birth and spirit. Here, Johan Langquist has created a distinctive sound that stands apart, which is important I think. From the very first track, Langquist’s vocals are exceptional. His voice is as commanding as ever, but there’s a maturity and nuance here that reflects his experience over the years. Whether he’s singing with soaring power or diving into more introspective moments, his voice remains central to the emotional impact of the album. Musically, the album shines with some stellar contributions from the guest musicians, including Fredrik Isaksson on bass and Stafen on drums. Isaksson’s bass work gives the songs a rich, heavy foundation, while Stafen’s drumming keeps everything grounded with a solid, rhythmic march. These performances elevate the album, making it feel less like a solo project and more like a true band effort. The chemistry between the musicians is palpable to me, and the whole thing feels natural and organic. I liked the fact that the band has also been able to convey complex emotions with such simplicity, translating this into one of the album’s strongest points and making it resonate on a deep level. Ultimately, “Johan Langquist The Castle” is a new step for Langquist, but not just a solo project; it’s the beginning of a new musical journey. It’s an album that feels both nostalgic and fresh, with enough depth and personality. Langquist has raised his heart and soul into this album for sure, and for me, is a fantastic introduction to what promises to be a new phase in his musical career. Best wishes, man!
