I’ve been aware of KHNVM for two reasons. Partly because of the band name, it’s a bit unique or different and I am still in a state of wonder as to what it means and / or what it pertains to. Plus it is also a cool design. The main reason I was drawn to the band though is the simply stunning cover art for their third full-length “Visions Of A Plague Ridden Sky”. The band could have sounded like a drunken COLDPLAY with only one string on their instruments and I would have still bought the album. That is how amazing it is to me. Suffice it to say I was generally pleased with the music the band presented and was not let down by an impulsive decision. Now here we are at their fourth full length “Cosmocrator”, while the cover is not mind blowing, it is still interesting enough to catch your eye. But enough of the art class, what about the music you say. In my initial assessment and till now I have always felt the band a sort of IMMOLATION lite. The band does evoke much of the same approach and dynamic in the songwriting, but they don’t quite reach the pinnacle of atmosphere and tone that IMMOLATION achieves. Mind you this is not a disparage to KHNVM at all, the band can and does draw you in with their own take of old school Death Metal with a slightly technical approach. The band foregoes the use of speed for a more mid-paced approach throughout the seven tracks and creates its own atmosphere with the riffs and melodies to create certain textures and dynamics in the songwriting. The title track has the most melodic approach with some minor guitar harmonies of all while track 6, ‘Venom Spawn’, has some heavy MELECHESH vibes with hints of BELPHEGOR. This I would consider my favorite and a bit of a standout. It incorporates much more dynamics in pacing, some slightly chaotic guitar solos and an underlying mysticism in the guitar tones and with a bit of variation in the vocals. A Black-ish tone ends it all on the final track. With its slow burn of an intro, slowly gaining in speed and you getting more into and sense of the drumming and overall buildup of momentum. A great closing track to draw you in further and thus to keep you interested and awaiting for the next album from this multi-cultural band. Take a look for yourselves along with that great cover art. www.facebook.com/khnvm666, www.facebook.com/testimonyrecords
