MALEDICTION are not swimming on the omnipresent old school Death Metal wave. No, actually the band itself is old school, because it was founded in 1990. In the same year the band from Great Britain also released their first demo “Infestation”. 33 years have now followed with longer and shorter interruptions. The material currently available is the most current in over 20 years, with three original members still active. If you only count the official releases it is even the first output since the “Dark Effluvium” EP, which dates back to 1993. A long time, but the musicians involved have not lost anything. Although the label Cosmic Key Creations informs us that only ‘Black Narcissus’ and ‘The Omerta Masquerade’ are new songs. On the other hand, I can only find one track, namely ‘Sky Written Rapture’ on previous releases. So maybe the other songs are old but just have not been released yet? However that be, at the end of the day five songs of solid Death Metal remain, you can tell that it comes from the UK, more than once I was reminded of BENEDICTION or NAPALM DEATH during the “Harmony Corruption” era. The “Soil Throne” EP is further refined by subtle AUTOPSY elements, especially in the guitar soloing. As unspectacular as it may sound at first, the EP has been playing on heavy rotation for days because what these gentlemen are producing is quite timeless. The only point of criticism is the last track ‘In Maledictus Sol’, a superfluous instrumental piece that seems unnecessary and out of place with its partly acoustic guitars. What I can not seriously answer is whether the simply structured songwriting is intentional or due to the limited abilities of the musicians. But that does not matter, because all old school Death Metal friends will really enjoy this authentic, unadulterated piece of Death Metal.
