Through the years I’ve encountered many German Black Metal bands. And they range from a “strict” Norwegian style to bands incorporating a lot of influences. In this case, NAIL BY NAIL’s sophomore full-length “Internal Inferno” is just that. An album that has a base on this subgenre and also mixes in a wide range of different styles. It’s weird that after the first spin, I thought this album sounded elegant and intense. I know, it is an odd choice of words but this album is enthralling, hypnotizing and distressful, all at the same time. I think this collection of songs offer some modern “colour” in the form of palm muted and percussive riffs yet the melodic and harmonic guitar work reminded me of early NAGLFAR (SWE) and DISSECTION. The grandiose aura associated with the Viking / Pagan style of music contrasts perfectly with the overall intensity of Black and even some atmospheric and Death Metal aspects. The tremolo riffs, the blast beats and the low to mid shrieking vocals combined with trance like open chords, captivating arpeggios and clean vocals in some of the songs extend the reach of “Internal Inferno” to a whole new ground. Performances like these guys know their instruments inside out. There are no excessive parts and the songs are not overwhelmed by unnecessary instrumentation. Lars’ and Tobias’ intricate guitar work (a bit unusual in this subgenre) constantly intertwines with Emmanuel’s tight and solid bass lines. Also, Noel’s drums sit perfectly in between providing not only a strong and precise backbone but also letting the songs breathe and opening up when needed. Last but not least, Phillip’s vocals are as good as they are diverse, with a vast array of character and lots of attitude. The production fits their style perfectly. The mix gives each instrument its own space but also unifies them in a thick wall of sound. Their style could be greatly benefited if the master let more of the dynamics come through. But that is just my humble opinion. In a world saturated with bands trying to sound classic, old school (oh I hate that term with a passion) or “too underground” listening to an ambil such as “Internal Inferno” is refreshing, so to speak. Although it provides 40 minutes of good old Black Metal, the album has many distinctive moods and various levels of brutality. NAIL BY NAIL is forging their identity and I look forward to their next output. Totally and absolutely recommended.
