I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but DEATHCULT basically being a supergroup of sorts, always flies under my radar. Partly because, yes, I have a lot on my plate music-wise, but also because the band has little to no fanfare at times upon new output. Each release, to me, is stellar but still seems to get lost in the shuffle. I am glad when the opportunity came about to review the latest from this exalted line-up. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance. You may say I’m a fanboy at the outset because all members are or have been part of many of the Black Metal bands that I continue to listen to this day. Some of the bands you say? How about GORGOROTH, TAAKE, URGEHAL all which feature highly in their sound. You will also get a bit of mid-era MARDUK, and also because a bit of the bands sound, but mainly in the production side of things, AD HOMINEN as well. I mention the production because this is no lo-fi bedroom going on here. Everything is clear and concise, and praise be the Dark One, you can actually hear the bass! Yes, you get prime second wave Black Metal with a sound that would cause many fans and supporters of the genre to turn their nose at. I bring up AD HOMINEM because moments come to mind in the technique and approach of their sound. Listen to ‘PseudoCommando’ and hear what I speak of. Now, yes, I can agree that it is a bit too much leaning to their other associated bands, but I feel they don’t proliferate the scene with a release every year or so, and this took almost seven years between that last full-length. You still cannot deny the energy and their own form of darkness they exude. I will not let this particular release be forgotten anytime soon. ‘Hyperviolence’ has been my track of choice and a motto / rally cry of sorts for myself of late. Dive into the “cult” and see what you come away with for yourself. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100048542901382, www.facebook.com/soulsellerrecords
