MDXX was formed in 2020 and consists of four unknown Swedish musicians who call themselves V, T, C and A. MDXX offers a freshly cremated sound that is straight from the present and the glorious past, inspired by the epic Heavy Metal and Doom tradition. After releasing their debut single “Decimation” in 2021, now this mysterious group returned with their self-titled debut full-length. And following the hints from the single, this debut expanded on their taste of classic Epic Doom, enriched with a lot of other ingredients from the pantry of ’80s Metal and Hard Rock. From the very beginning with ‘Gasbreather’, the guitars will draw attention and then the voice of the anonymous singer gives the whole affair a downy, sometimes eery, or downright sacred mood. The inevitable Doom foundation is loosened up now and then, yet the following ‘Oblivion’ ignites with a thrashy rhythm while the NWOBHM harmonics dominate the whole song. ‘Enforcer’, ‘Blåkulla’ and ‘Sanctum’ will closely remind of GHOST, however proving the rapid transition of atmosphere, ‘Infestissumam’ will further expand their Doom like metallic side. With the driving “Decimation” and the sluggish ‘Submission’, the spirits of CANDLEMASS will not stay far away. With all this, the unknown Swedes manage to deliver an album with a retro appeal and catchiness that never felt forced or amateurish. The song writing seems purposeful and well thought out with the genre typical atmosphere and clandestinity. Also, the warm production adds to the listening experience and reinforces the ’80s roots. The anonymity of MDXX should not let them fall completely in obscurity, as with this debut the Swedes should get a hold in the ever-transforming underground and the genre faithfuls shouldn’t skip.
