May I get your attention extreme Death Metal fans for a moment, as here might be something for you dear gals and guys. French NEPHREN-KA have created a concept album in which lyrical themes are based on Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi series, Dune. Not being a sci-fi freak that much at all, I simply skip this part due to my knowledge about Dune being simply on a zero level. The music herein, however, does have some fair amounts of bombastic power behind it, which is wrapped around some pretty good, all-crushing and devastating atmospheres. NILE is apparently the first name coming to mind, and certainly the biggest separate musical influence on NEPHREN-KA – especially NILE’s earliest days. I would also drag such names as MORBID ANGEL, HATE ETERNAL and KRISIUN, for some of their influences when talking about these French Deathsters musical formula "The Fall Of Omnius", which really doesn’t invent anything genre wise, not in the least. Still NEPHREN-HA can be credited for all their hard efforts in creating a kinda lethal dose of well structured, complex and kinda multi-layered, brutal Death Metal that undoubtedly will please many. With the type of stuff they have churned out on their debut full-length, it’s unfortunately extremely difficult for them to stand out from the masses. There are hundreds, or even thousands of bands out there nowadays that do similar sounding shit to NEPHREN-KA’s. That’s gonna be a slight problem for this French quartet in the long run, I believe. If you want to think NEPHREN-KA are just another run-of-the-mill Death Metal act in the ever-growing long line, that’s fine too, I guess. However, pleasing everyone is impossible these days – and what this album is for, I strongly gotta believe it will still make a lot of Death Metal fans somewhat happy.
