After one demo and a couple of EPs, the Finnish blackened Thrash Metal camp (with some Death Metal overtones here and there, and mainly vocal-wise though) NEUTRON HAMMER unleashes their debut full-length studio album, somewhat ominously titled "Iron Storm Evocation". As some of you may know already, NEUTRON HAMMER features a little army of relatively known – either current or ex – members of some Finnish extreme Metal groups, this ‘black’ list including such names as HORNA, RIDE FOR REVENGE, PERDITION WINDS, LIE IN RUINS and the list goes on (and on and on). So, the question is whether NEUTRON HAMMER can be considered more like a real band – or just a side project type of act only, I have just no idea about that at all. However, one thing is certain already: NEUTRON HAMMER churn out a completely different ‘shit’ compared to the lads’ so-called main bands, so supposedly the whole existence of NEUTRON HAMMER was meant to satisfy these fellows’ other musical needs; hence they formed this group back in 2003. Back to the "Iron Storm Evocation" record now though. As mentioned earlier already, blackened Thrash Metal is the name of this ugly and filthy game on NEUTRON HAMMER’s "Iron Storm Evocation". It’s no surprise either these four Finns don’t bring any new weapons on the already large table of the very genre here but I guess that’s exactly THAT thing that should fascinate or excite each of us, at some level at least. NEUTRON HAMMER’s raw, fast, malevolent, relatively simple – and partly even chaotic Black / Thrash Metal (the main emphasis being on the latter one) is actually lotsa fun to listen to. There’s something unexplained magnetism in their primitive, barbaric and straightforward blackened Thrash Metal sound that appeals my organs of hearing anyway. It’s like the whole record screams like ‘no gimmicks – no bullshit – no fancy or slick production found here’, building up its whole deep and sincere charm around that aforementioned theme from the very first moments on. NEUTRON HAMMER have adopted a sound for themselves on "Iron Storm Evocation" that is like a cross between the demo era of DESTRÖYER 666 and AURA NOIR, if you need some free guidance to make you curious enough to check this record out. The production on "Iron Storm Evocation" makes you wonder though whether the guys have recorded the whole album at their own rehearsal room live within just 1 – 2 days, by using some old 8 – track analog recorder. The production is mainly muddy and kinda low-fi on the record but gladly it’s really the guys’ frenzied and wicked touch over their songs that makes it up for them – well, for the most part anyways.
