I used to hear about these guys quite a few times already prior to receiving their first full length album, as NOCTURNAL WORSHIPPER are obviously considered another cult act of the Brazilian scene by many underground people… Well, to tell you the hurting truth: I just don’t get it! To me the material on “The Return Of The Southern Tyrants” is nothing but completely uninspired raw and fast Black Metal of the most average kind. The band is heavily lacking in exciting riffs and what’s even more important – the right eerie and dark feeling. It ain’t enough to put on corpsepaint, inverted crosses, bullet belts and lots of spikes. As far as I can recall Black Metal was always supposed to create a dark blasphemous atmosphere and should not only consist of screamy vocals, monotonous and fast played guitars with a very thin production and kinda sloppy drumming, or did I maybe get something wrong on the way somehow?! They claim to follow the path of HELLHAMMER, BATHORY, VENOM, SODOM, DESTRUCTION and MAYHEM… Well, nothing wrong with that as long as the songwriting is strong enough to convince on its own, but in NOCTURNAL WORSHIPPER’s case I still have serious doubts… Let’s face the facts – there’s already tons of bands around that are way more effective in this department, so would you seriously spend your hard earned money on an average release like this?
