NOTHINGNESS
The Hollow Gaze Of Death
(Memento Mori)
37:21min

Think of an army tank, the soldiers within, withstanding the mighty chunks of moving metal with the tank slowly moving across an unforgiving terrain crushing rocks along the way. NOTHINGNESS approaches their Death Metal in a similar methodology. They aren’t in a hurry, their riffs aren’t hitting notes-per-second-records but they take their time slowly building up an atmosphere of heaviness. Nothing is out of place here, they take in the BOLT THROWER approach of mid-paced riffs followed by sections of brute force attack. At the heart of the sound is the celebration of old school Death Metal, whilst the riffs are an immediate giveaway, it is the drumming that cements the message of the band. Delicate, timely and consistent across the entire album. There’s a direct derivation of the late 90s drumming, I’m positive Chris Reifert would really like this. There are no full 3 minute double bass assaults, rather, the drummer displays patience and chimes in with extremity only when called for. The bass weaves in beautifully across the rhythm. This is a well written and well mixed record. I’m sure we’d see it on a few Top 10 lists at the least. While I like Death Metal without a hurry, I hate monotony. NOTHINGNESS jumps around with tempo and sounds ready almost always. This is a fantastic companion in your car. I will definitely see them live when I can and so should you. Good thick sludgy / doomy riffs, excellent drumming and vocals incorporating multiple styles. This album has checked off all the boxes and is just 37 minutes long so you won’t’ feel drained by it at all. Category: Post work driving companion.
