PAZUZU
Revenant Of Blasphemies
(Dunkelheit Produktionen)
20:45min

PAZUZU is a Death Metal band from Costa Rica. And “Revenant of Blasphemies” is their debut demo tape, now available in CD version courtesy of the German label Dunkelheit Produktionen. There are 3 songs plus intro and outro, clocking at 20 minutes. I was really surprised by this release. Besides the amazing cover artwork (in both, the tape and the CD versions), the music speaks for itself and it took me back to the good old days (for Death Metal, obviously) of the early 90s. The production is raw and organic. Although a bit muffled, it has lots of character and bite. The mix is clear and every instrument has its place. Overall it is nicely done and it showcases the band’s style well. They tend to keep things up with mid-tempo and fast parts, but never reaching blast beat levels. But they also dwell into Doom Metal territory. And I think here is where the band really shines, as they get heavier in terms of overall sound and even a bit more “nostalgic”, so to speak. Drummer Keyrotten’s performance is good. He knows when to use his double bass drums and cymbals to accent key parts although he could play more drum fills here and there. Steven on bass helps keep things tight, mostly following what the guitar is doing. Guitarist Giovanni uses mostly power chords and sometimes tremolo picking for fast parts but definitely his excellent, eerie and melancholic melodies take over when the band slows down. Tomil’s vocals fit perfectly as he uses deep grunts, growls and also high pitched screams to keep things interesting. Overall, this is a no frills, “in your face” Death Metal release with really good Doom Metal influences.
