This one is a little bit different and the band’s style might be quite unusual for the taste of most of our Voices readers. The sound of TENRIN can basically be described as a kind of melodic (symphonic) Power Metal combining the European style of Metal and (of course) the typical influences from their native country Japan to an interesting and unique mix. So it should be quite clear that you won’t get the heaviest dose of your favourite kind of music here. In addition, the alloy might sound a little bit strange first to someone’s ears which are hardened by relentless Metal Of Death. But if you would like to relax from all that brutal & lethal doses of steel and plunge deeper into the world of TENRIN then you are able to discover the musical class of this five piece outfit from Shizuoka. These youngsters are skilled, especially the excellent guitarists, and there’s no doubt about it. It’s obviously that both axemen have a classical background as their playing style often reminds me on some neoclassical outfits including the intensive use of leads. The fact I don’t like is the (almost) permanent use of synths in their tracks. Even they are just using them too highlight the tracks I think that wouldn’t be necessary and makes the compositions a bit watery at times. A problem which almost all Japanese acts have in common are the vocalists. Same goes for TENRIN. Yossy’s voice lacks a little bit the power and energy to convince me totally but he is trying his best for sure and his vocals might serve the songs well. The 14 tracks (incl. intro) have a various range of styles to offer. From typical (neoclassical) Speed Metal, heavier mid pace parts, Hard Rock, calmer passages and even some J-Rock elements. Sometimes the tunes seem to have a progressive edge as well. The album’s lyrical themes dealing about life and death. Too make it short: if you would like to discover something new (and if you are open minded enough) and don ‘t like to drop the Metal sytle when listening to something different then you can give TENRIN a try.
