Knochengesänge II

What do we have here? It’s WALDGEFLÜSTER, a Black Metal band from Bavaria, around since 2005 with a discography of seven full length albums, none of which I ever heard before. Started as one of those countless one man projects by Winterherz, the band evolved to a full band over the years. After four years of silence, WALDGEFLÜSTER presented two new albums this autumn. “Knochengesänge” and “Knochengesänge II” are two variations of the same seven songs in, as far as I found out, very different versions. After listening to the latter, I hope that the first part has something to do with Metal, as “Knochengesänge II” mostly has not. Instead, the mainly long songs are somewhere between Post Rock, Gothic Rock and boring dreariness. Which means, we have atmospheric, yet monotonous songs that remain static, garnished with clear vocals that transport no emotions but depression and hopelessness. To me, the biggest problem of the album is that I always waited for an outbreak of Metal, shrieking vocals, clashing guitars, hyperspeed drumming, something like that. But it never happens. Some might think that “Knochengesämge II” is great art with ambition and maybe they are right. But as a Metalhead, I think this is nothing but an overambitious waste of time. And as WALDGEFLÜSTER is German for “Forest Whisperings”, I think I’ll know that the forests would whisper “Turn that off, please!” while having to listen to “Knochengesänge II”.
