After the 2023 EP “The Gathering Of Souls”, the 2023 live album “Live At Tiivistämö” and the 2022 demo “Uncontrollable Malformity” (their first release), the Finnish band MALFORMED has returned this 2025 with a new album called “Confinement Of Flesh”. I must admit that MALFORMED is one of those bands that has been a bit difficult for me to digest, as the Death Metal they play is too technical for my taste. It’s curious, I play the guitar myself and I like technique, but I don’t get along very well with any of the Metal subgenres that have the words “technical” or “progressive” in their name. Because yes, MALFORMED is one of those bands born from the legacy of the first stage of bands like ATHEIST or DEATH (in their progressive phase). Although MALFORMED’s first works also have, for me, certain influences of bands like SUFFOCATION and even DEICIDE in their most brutal parts, without that meaning they neglect their roots in Finland and Finnish Death Metal, here, on “Confinement Of Flesh”, I noticed a certain approach more towards the sound of bands like MORBID ANGEL or even SIJJIN, close to our decade, so this album felt much closer and easier for me to understand. Songs like ‘Confinement Of Terror’, ‘Abnormal Euology’ or ‘Return Of The Plague’ are structured on the bases of those sounds from MORBID ANGEL or SIJJIN. But yes, MALFORMED don’t completely abandon the technical Death Metal part that has characterized them, and they are capable of perfectly mixing that part (in some songs sounding like MORBID ANGEL) with quite progressive areas that appear and disappear when you least expect it. In summary, I find MALFORMED a band capable of consolidating influences from various sectors of Death Metal into their own style to put them to their service and sound like MALFORMED. Because, although it is true that when listening to them (at least it happens to me), I also hear influences from several bands, I also know that they are the ones playing. MALFORMED, like many other relatively young bands, are paying tribute to the old school of Death Metal, which, for me, is commendable and perfectly valid. MALFORMED is a complex, coherent and very well-structured band. This projects them very well for the years to come in that area of Death Metal they decided to circulate in. I will conclude by saying that, although I am not a big fan of such technical bands, especially in Death Metal, “Confinement Of Flesh” is, without a doubt, an album full of great sonic richness, so you have to listen to it and enjoy it. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088862900983, www.facebook.com/extremelyrottenproductions, www.facebook.com/darkdescentrecords
