REVEL IN FLESH
Flesh For The Kult Of Death
(War Anthem Records)
47:35min

Alright, this lot cut straight to the chase! Put your steel helmet on and get your butcher’s apron as the first song already starts fast and directly in your face. ENTOMBED (the inspiration for the band’s name) and more recent German Death Metal bands such as FLESHCRAWL (not just because of the “flesh-based” lyrics!) immediately spring to mind here. Almost from the beginning, proper melodies serve as an undercurrent to the otherwise relentless Death Metal assault that is REVEL IN FLESH. What is remarkable though is the variation of fast and slower but nevertheless really heavy songs, an art that Death Metal bands really have to master. ASPHYX spring to mind when listening to ‘The Graverobber’ and ‘Hellhole’ – not a bad reference, eh? Slower does not mean leaning towards Doom Metal, though. It gets better still with ‘Tombstalker’ which begins in a similar vein, but then turns into a faster song, thus covering both ends of the spectrum, and ‘Death Kult Maniacs’ a really fast and impulsive track. The album is rounded off by ‘All I Had (I Gave)’, an interesting CROWBAR cover. What’s interesting is that the four lads who created all this noise hail from Germany and Sweden, forming a kind of Death Metal supergroup: guitarist Jonny Pettersson alone was part of about two dozen (no shit!) other bands including MASSACRE and ROTPIT, the latter being a playground he is still sharing with REVEL IN FLESH’s drummer and fellow Swede Erik Barthold as well as vocalist Ralf ‘Haubersson’ Hauber. Founded in 2011, REVEL IN FLESH have put out six studio albums thus far, and also more than a dozen splits and singles as well as a compilation and a live album. Bottom line: this band and their sixth album are what Death Metal really is about! If you are into any of the above named bands you should definitely listen to it. Begin with ‘Body Bag Inferno’ while you’re at it! www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100044540135116, www.facebook.com/waranthemrecords
