DISCARNATION is a pretty raw and interesting entity that mixes old school Death Metal, Doom Metal and Funeral Doom. Ok, you got the point and for sure this is not an original approach in 2025, since we’ve been facing a continuos revival of doomed Death Metal in the last decade. So, even if DISCARNATION doesn’t add anything to the genre in terms of originality, their second Demo entitled “Mournful Incantations Of Mortality” is a decent effort for those looking for a simplistic clone of bands like INCANTATION, DISMA, DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY, DISEMBOWELMENT, ANATOMIA etc. What emerges from these six tracks from almost thirty minutes of music is the ultra gloomy atmosphere, achieved through a very lo-fi and raw sound production that is able of carrying the listener in a descent into the bowels of obscurity. The guitar distortion and the riffing style give off an heavy sense of dark rotteness and decay, both during the fast parts and the hyper slow doomy sections. The atmosphere is claustrophobic and the album sounds like it was recorded in a crypt or a catacomb. The drumming is minimalistic but very effective, the same goes for the profound and guttural vocals. The tremolo riffs bridges supported by slow beats are an unusual choice that add anxiety to the whole structure. The cover artwork reminds me of the “Face Of Evil” EP from NUNSLAUGHTER. In conclusion, if you’re into sick and suffocating Death / Doom Metal, “Mournful Incantations Of Mortality” is a pretty good choice.
