You can run, but you can not hide. At least when you are writing reviews. We are talking about one of the most active musicians the Death Metal genre has ever seen and of course everyone knows the name Rogga Johansson. For me, his works were always just average, not terrible, but also nothing special or memorable. So I tried to avoid reviewing one of his bands, but at the end of the day, he finally got me. For a pretty simple reason, because I liked the name THOSE WHO BRING THE TORTURE and thus wrote a review for their self-titled debut in 2007. That was just twenty years ago, but when I see that a MySpace page is listed as contact, it seems like centuries ago. THOSE WHO BRING THE TORTURE managed to convince me with this special mix of Grindcore and Death Metal, that bands like NECRONY, REPULSION or early CARCASS are known for. After that I did not follow the band’s progress any further, so I was all the more curious about what had happened since. “Miscreant World” surprised me in two aspects. Only traces remain from the Grindcore influences. Secondly, and that is really a surprise for me, although the album sounds pretty like standard modern Swedish Death Metal, I enjoyed the just over 30 minutes. Perhaps it is mainly due to the short playing time, only ‘Conjuring The Rotten Earth’ exceeds the four-minute limit. Brevity is the soul of wit, as they say. If someone is now complaining about the modern production, the riffs that feel like they have heard them a million times before, the average vocals and generally about generic, faceless Death Metal which an artificial intelligence nowadays can write, play and produce, then, well that is just your opinion.
