Having just finished a review of a blackened War Metal band outta the Pacific Northwest of the USA (HEXALTAR by the way), little did I know I will get a similar-sounding band hailing from Chile as my next review. First off, a similar band name. Further parallels exist between the two bands, as both are composed of two members and each takes their own approach to this aggressive, if not primal, sound. However, HEXEREI has a more pronounced leaning towards ARCHGOAT, with occasional influences from BEHERIT. I say this because, upon listening, there is a darker, gloomier simplicity to the overall approach. It can also be basic in its attitude to songwriting, as well as in the overall sound, which is, in essence, singular and one-track-minded. You are definitely not getting GORGUTS type musicianship here. As this is a compilation of sorts, you will hear noticeable fluctuations in sound quality. I say this because you hear some different sounding drums with the cymbals, pinging and clanging along. They are too high in the mix. Others have that very lo-fi bedroom quality as well. It’s only for a few songs that the different productions lend contrast to the band’s overall sound. You also have some live submissions to complete the overall package. Mainly with HEXEREI, you are getting a far more moody and atmospheric approach to cavernous Death Metal, and maybe offering a bit more substance. Thusly, it gives you a bit more to chew on and not just a whirlwind to leave you wondering what just happened. Is this a worthy purchase? Well, if you enjoy a very primitive and chaotic form of Death Metal, this is for you. The sonic disparities between each song and the caveman like approach are too grating for my liking. On the better-produced tracks, there are some glimpses. Let’s see what happens in a few years. www.facebook.com/kultderhexerei, www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61563068500501
