In an interview for their latest album “Dread Emperor” the guys from SLAUGHTERDAY compared their style to the ever-popular pizza. Everyone knows how it tastes, but you can always change a few details. In my opinion, a fitting comparison. The challenge therefore is to create something new, but not to invent something. Same can be said of FAYENNE, because melodic Black / Death Metal is certainly nothing new, but the band from Uppsala, Sweden, manages to incorporate a few unique ingredients. Firstly, there is the concentrated songwriting, which is already noticeable from the short playing time. During the eight songs there are no superfluous moments, no excursions into other genres, everything is pretty much to the point. But that does not mean ”The Calling From The Depth” is some kind of stripped-down version of DISSECTION, NAGLFAR or WATAIN. On the contrary, all the trademarks are there, just in a more condensed form. Many bands try this, but get bogged down in details and end up with a hectic, immature mess. Second aspect is the focus not only on the darkside, the occult and the secrets of the black arts, but also on the feminine aspect of the mentioned. It is about addressing topics such as sexuality, violence and social inequality, but from a feminist perspective. Do not worry, although it is an interesting topic, this is not going to be an excursion about Feminist Black Metal. Third trademark is the vocals. High-pitched screaming with a special throaty undertone, definitely an ear-catcher. I cannot think of a comparison off the top of my head, all the more reason to check out the following places: www.facebook.com/fayenne-1967386953577519, https://ugresistance.se/labels/nigredo-records
