According to self-made statistics, France must have one Black Metal band in every village. At least there is no other logical explanation for the huge amount of bands that crossed my way in the last few years. Or is it that it’s often my duty to review the releases from Les Acteurs De L’Ombre Productions on these pages? Luckily for me, it’s mainly a pleasure to review the albums from this label. This also goes for the first album from A/ORATOS as the four-piece from Paris offers some really fine Black Metal on “Ecclesia Gnostica”. The approach of mastermind Wilhelm is based on cold, raging riffs, fast beats and a more than decent use of melodies and harmonies. Yet he hasn’t forgotten the extra something: a well dosed variety and an atmospheric depth in songwriting. There’s enough breaks to keep the songs full of suspense and surprises. Be it changes of speed, more quiet moments or epic parts full of grandeur – A/ORATOS keep the seven rather long songs always thrilling and profound. Thus “Ecclesia Gnostica” should address those of you who dig the rather new school of Black Metal from Norway or Iceland in particular. For me, A/ORATOS marked an early highlight of the Metal year 2024, as songs like ‘Le Hiérophante’, ‘Deuteros’ or ‘Le Septième Sceau’ represent what I personally like about contemporary Black Metal.
