The story of this review begins with a confusion. A simple transposed letter, “a” instead of “v”, caused irritation for me. Quite a change of style, from symphonic Black Metal to Funeral Doom Metal, that was my first thought, until I realized that I was confusing ADVERSVM with ADVERSAM. To complete the confusion – there is another band with a similar name, namely ADVERSUM, even from the same state, namely Lower Saxony in Germany. “Vama Marga” is the third full-length by ADVERSVM, the band has been around since 2015. Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered at Soundlodge Studio in Rhauderfehn, Germany the ten songs know how to convince the listeners with a clear and powerful sound. This is not really surprising as the list of bands that have recorded in this studio is quite impressive. From European acts like SLAUGHTERDAY, SINISTER, KEITZER, GOD DETHRONED even to international bands like ANVIL. So in terms of production everything is fine, the exciting question is whether the music as such can keep up. In my opinion, definitely, except for one aspect. When you hear the grunty vocals and the low-tuned guitars, the sluggish tempo, then the description is absolutely fitting, a perfect embodiment of Funeral Doom Metal. What bothers me are the tracks ‘Exordium’ and ‘Mölingssken’, which serve as intro / outro and the interludes ‘Parinama’, ‘Antisphere’ and ‘Retrograde’. The fact that these are purely instrumental pieces without a distorted guitar is not the problem, but the overall auditory impression is disturbed. Tons of black lava is pumped through the loudspeakers and then some ambient swirling appears, looking like alost sheep. But that is just my personal opinion, Funeral Doom Metal fans should put the album on the shopping list and anyone interested to know what state-of-the-art Funeral Doom Metal sounds like in 2023 should take listen by visiting www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100036848335829, www.moribundcult.com
