In all honesty, I am greatly impressed by this first offering from this French five piece. Formed back in 2001 under another moniker (AMALEK, a wise move to have changed that if you ask me…), AGNOSYS play a form of melodic Death Metal almost forgotten today. I am referring here to the fantastic wave of the Gothenburg bands that conquered the scene around 1992-1994. To be more precise, I found out on this MCD the same atmosphere which prevailed in the very first AT THE GATES records (the best era of this band to me). So you see the picture: intricate songs, lots of breaks and tempo changes, intimate passages that follow or precede furious outbursts of energy. The production is absolutely remarkable, the sound crystalline and warm. At no moment the band fall in the trap of arrogance and self-indulgence despite their obvious musical talent and technical abilities (the plague of many outfit specialized in virtuosity and complexity). Add to all this an extremely professional presentation (you can’t guess the MCD is a self financed product, if not by studying it with great care), and I think this is a great offering to purchase. Before I forgot, I would like too stress out the very good performance of vocalist Maxime, the guy knows how to belt out pure Death Metal vocals, deep without being undecipherable, and that make contrast with the delicacy of the music. To sum it up, I can’t advise you enough to check out for this great band. They deserve a deal without delay, trust me on that! If you miss the once fantastic aforementioned Swedish scene, you have to get this one.
