Another release by the Polish label Odium Records, which recently released the BLACK ALTAR / VARATHRON / THORNSPAWN three-way split, the debut of THY FLESH and the latest CREPUSCULUM album. So I guess you can anticipate the style of “Behold The Son Of Plagues” – correct, Black Metal. This is the first full-length by AKROTHEISM from Greece, previously (2013) they released one song on a split EP with their fellow countrymen ORDER OF THE EBON HAND. On “Behold The Son Of Plagues” the listener will find eight tracks plus intro, plus a cover version. Mainly fast played Black Metal with yelling voices, names like SETHERIAL or DARK FUNERAL appear in my mind. And sometimes the keyboards are given priority, maybe LIMBONIC ART are the source of the inspiration. But that are just my personal preferences, a lot of bands play this style of Black Metal. And despite the fact that there must be hundreds of releases with that certain kind of Black Metal, AKROTHEISM manage to play quite entertaining. Be it the great melodies during ‘Antimatter As I’, be it the spooky keyboards on ‘Send Us To Swines’, be it the crushing mid-tempo song ‘Flagellum Made Catharsis’ or the slow beginning of ‘Hanged In The Shaft Of The Abyss’ which ends up in high-speed rage and fury. Last up is the VED BUENS ENDE cover ‘To Swarm Deserted Away’ and due to the fact that this band has never been one my favorites the best I can say is that it does not reduce the fine overall picture of this album.
