Who do you think of when you think of Japanese Black Metal? Many answers could be given to that question anywhere from ABIGAIL, SIGH, or even SABBAT or GALLHAMMER. BAFOMET, a three piece Black / Speed Metal outfit hailing from Japan, are busy crafting some of the most high octane, entertaining and evil Black / Speed Metal in the underground these days. BAFOMET is bringing that blackend Speed Rock’n’Roll fury in spades here, sounding less like a second wave Black Metal band and more like a first wave Black Metal band at this point. What sets the album aside is the execution more than the sound, although there is definitely a noticeable shift in the sound as well. It seems as if they were trying to write some concert anthems here and I’d say they’ve succeeded. There is definitely a MOTÖRHEAD / VENOM meets blackened Speed Metal vibe going on here. The aforementioned anthemic Speed Metal stylings meeting the cold and buzzsaw Black Metal we like so much.
