BURIAL CHOIR
The Eucharist Of Martyrs
(Fallen Temple)

Chile’s BURIAL CHOIR are a blackened Funeral Doom Metal band and “The Eucharist Of Martyrs” is their second full length, released on Fallen Temple. Albeit not a traditional Funeral Doom Metal band (in comparison to the greats from their country and one of my personal favourites SKEPTICISM) BURIAL CHOIR strikes the right chords with this album. The vocals, though growled, stand two steps behind the thick layers of distortion and minimal drumming. They build the atmosphere with gentle care and precision. Another comparison that comes to my mind is the delivery of another stellar band from their country, HOODED MENACE. While HOODED MENACE survives on gently moving the wall of sound, BURIAL CHOIR seems to be focusing first on building that wall with great care and their effort truly comes across through the entire album. Track # 1 ‘Anathema’ is the perfect representation, slow brooding guitars that accompany the harsh vocals slinking on melody. BURIAL CHOIR have the definite approach of the greats like MY DYING BRIDE, providing you with a soundtrack for these lost times. ‘The Eucharist Of Martyrs’ is another 10 minute track and sways between being a Tibetan monk chant and a Funeral Doom track. The first three and a half minutes the song is just setting up the tone, devoid of vocals, the band extensively focuses on setting up a baseline, with a beautiful instrumental piece with a gentle interlude. This is where I see BURIAL CHOIR at their best, they’re full of plans and they’ve found a simplistic methodology for execution. It honestly is an absolute delight, although not a straightforward Funeral Doom band, I like how they mash multiple angles of desolation into one track. I quite like this and if you’re a fan of Doom or Death Metal at large, you must check this band out for sure. Category: a snowplough companion.
