Buried Beneath Human Remains
(Morbid Chapel Records)

Having lived in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, I became acquainted with much of the scene in that area. I’m sure you, the readers, are aware of that bands from different states on that side of the US, is that they tend to be a little bit different in their sonic approach to Metal in general. Bands like WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, UADA, FETID and a host of others all take a slightly altered path in the songwriting department. Take CASKET FLESH as a prime example. At first listen, you can immediately hear where they are coming from and who they primarily take their sound from. I will also tell you that’s not necessarily a bad thing for the most part. I hear much of AUTOPSY’s “Mental Funeral” era and maybe a less thrashier version of DECEASED at times. The band plays at mid-paced gate for the majority of this release, and only the album closer and title track ‘Buried Beneath Human Remains’ delivering at a more frenetic pace. One factor that clearly gives the AUTOPSY vibes is the production itself. The sound is not what one would expect, but it’s bright and sorta monotone and with an almost echo-like quality at times. It’s almost too clean-sounding. I would like to hear a bit more grime, a bit more of a dirtier sound. I think it would give a more atmospheric feel to the overall sound. On that note, the band does play in a slightly off-kilter way, so I feel a slight adjustment in the production end of things could elevate the band further. This is only their first EP, and with only a demo and a single preceding this, they have plenty of time to develop things. Not too bad for a 20-minute ode to all that is grimy and AUTOPSY like. I will look into them on their next release and see how the guys have developed. https://casketflesh.bandcamp.com, www.facebook.com/morbidchapelrecords
