When I think of French Death / Thrash Metal I always have MASSACRA in my mind. I wouldn’t call myself an expert in the French Metal scene, but MASSACRA were probably the most outstanding and especially most successful one. In a way French Metal bands never got that much recognition outside of their country. I’m afraid to tell that this won’t change with this release. CHAOS LEGIONS are a Thrash Metal band with hints of Death Metal especially considering the vocals, and up to this recording without an own identity. OK, you can’t expect an own identity on the first release and I don’t complain here at all, the music itself is powerful, well structured and with cool breaks and riffs and the whole mixture sounds for me a little bit comparable to the German Thrashers of DEW-SCENTED without reaching their intensity. And that’s basically the biggest problem: the lack of intensity. Thrash Metal needs to sound like a punch in your face, with razor-sharp guitars and straightforward drumming. Everything is here a little bit but simply not much enough. I have a good feeling that CHAOS LEGIONS kick ass live and I can confirm that they are a very promising band to watch out for. I think this first CD was a little bit too early, nevertheless if the guys keep on working hard on their upcoming material I’m sure the next review will be filled with glorifications. And too be honest, MASSACRA were everything else than convincing on “Final Holocaust” and CHAOS LEGIONS are already more skilled than MASSACRA back then. For those who are looking out for an interesting yet not full-grown Thrash Metal act should take the time to check out their myspace-site at www.myspace.com/chaoslegionsband and listen to the sound samples offered there and make your own picture.
