Being formed in 1998, the band went more or less comatose, like they wrote on their homepage. After a break for seven years, where the members played in different acts, they got together again and recorded a demo, published in 2006 that directly led to a record contract and now we have the result of the cooperation with Woodcut Records. For those who are interested, the vocalist and bassist M. Lillmans is also active in FINNTROLL since January 2006, a fact that is currently repeated when I googled some facts about the band. But I guess it is just for promotion reasons, maybe the label is trying to make some FINNTROLL fans buy this album. But CHTHONIAN are not a side-project of FINNTROLL, they existed before and M.Lillmans joined FINNTROLL after he already recorded a demo with CHTHONIA. But enough of such facts, lets take a look to something which is more important than who is playing where – the music. The eight songs on "Of Beatings And The Silence Between" are a brutal combination between Death and modern Thrash Metal. Well, many bands have tried such a combination, but just a few did manage to let not lose sight of the music. CHTHONIAN manage to write brutal songs, where you can spot different influences, but it still sound very homogenous. Death Metal growls, alternating Thrash and Death Metal riffs, the typical modern, Hardcore influenced breaks, then again fast drumming, but also those well known mid-paced double bass parts, a very nice combination. Really a good debut, I wonder where CHTHONIAN could be if they did not went comatose for seven years.
