First of all – don’t be to afraid of this release because of the band name, I thought this would be something utterly crappy like SIKFUK (see my review on this webpage) when I read the name, but it ain’t. COATHANGER ABORTION is a five-piece from Chattanooga, TN that performs straight-to-the-face Death / Grind that musically is heavily rooted in the mid-90s when this style was still fresh, fun listening to and played by bands not under-fucked wankers with a drum computer and guitar skills from excessive Guitar Hero gaming. Imagine the speed / slam mix of LIVIDITY plus a bit of mid-90s CANNIBAL CORPSE – that goes especially for the vocals, they sound a lot like Chris Barnes on “Tomb Of The Mutilated” – and early SUFFOCATION minus the technical perfection and you’ll have COATHANGER ABORTION. “Dying Breed” contains nine tunes driven by good, memorable yet somewhat unspectacular riffs, solid drumming and is topped off by an honest, pure, organic production by Bob Moore (NILE, LUST OF DECAY) that unfortunately is a bit lacking punch on the bass drum. Overall, “Dying Breed” is a totally fine, enjoyable and brutal album actually hitting my soft spot for mid-90s US Death Metal quite well despite a couple of un-tight passages, absolute lack of anything new or inspiring and the aforementioned lush drum sound.
