COFFINCRAFT
In Eerie Slumber
(Memento Mori)
40:29min

Seems like the Death Metal scene in Finland is getting stronger and stronger during the last years. COFFINCRAFT are hailing from the lovely town of Joensuu and after two EPs in 2010 and 2012 they finally released their debut. Interestingly "In Eerie Slumber" sounds more like Swedish Death Metal, more DISMEMBER than DEMILICH or DEMIGOD. But since I have never been an expert when it comes to pigeonholing, lets take a closer look to the 40 minutes filled with some fine music. First recognizable fact are the vocals, more some kind of husk shouting than deep Death Metal growls, always a thin line whether you like that style of vocal performance or not. Sometimes such vocals just sound too artificially and contrived, like the vocalist tries to sound like Chris Barnes but lacks of skills to do so. Personally I like the vocals performance, not least because of the transparent and powerful sound. Musically the band covers the range from short two and a half minutes rapping Death Metal attacks like the track ‘Ego Pt.II’ right up to more doom ridden onslaughts like the seven minutes of ‘The Claimant’. Another aspect worth mentioning, besides the sound and the nice cover is the excellent songwriting plus the profound skills of the musicians. Although the trio never leaves the well known paths of Swedish Death Metal, the album sounds fresh and crisp at every second. While I am writing these lines the year 2015 is almost over (only five hours left), so no chance to get into the Top Ten list, but "In Eerie Slumber" is the first one on my shopping list 2016! www.facebook.com/coffincraft, www.memento-mori.es
