CRY OF THE NILE / COMPULSIVE
The Voiceless Death Symphony

I remember back in the ’90s split releases were a more common thing than they are nowadays. It was a good way to listen to more music from different bands in one release. But nowadays, with the ease to get music, those split releases and compilations are becoming a more strange thing to find. The first part of this release is the “Welcome To My Killing Spree” EP by Germany’s COMPULSIVE, a band that there is little info to be found of, besides that this is their first release. Their music style is Death Metal with strong evil Thrash influences, something that reminded me of a mixture between the more Death’n’Roll era of ENTOMBED and “Agent Orange” SODOM. The lyrical aspect of the band seems to be zombies and murder, but one can sense some black humor in there that for some reason reminds me of IMPETIGO. The recording has values above a demo recording, yet still rough at the edges. For a time it is a fun listening, but it does not much more for me. On the other hand CRY OF THE NILE comes from Poland and their part here is from their “Invocation” EP. Where they show a brutal and direct style of Death Metal with references to the old Florida style bands but the more brutal ones, like MORBID ANGEL, BRUTALITY or MONSTROSITY. Also there is a strong Thrash Metal influence and the overall sound does actually remind me of that era in the ’90s where demos in a similar style were coming from the USA. Also the sound quality is above a demo, with maybe a strange mix of the drums, but that is always preferred over an overproduced sound. I like this part of the split more as the music and execution fits more what I like, but again do not expect something original or exceptional. This is the type of release where you feel that both bands have potential, but it is obvious that they are still developing their sound and identity. But the essence of splits is something I always liked, so this is also a nostalgia lane for those who want to collect this type of releases (I personally don’t understand at all why this release was ruined with such a terrible, terrible cover artwork, which looks like it was put together by a Photoshop trainee on his very first day – Frank).
