Pretty interesting release from the French label Great Dane Records that brings back to life an obscure piece of Death Metal from the very early ’90s. “Aeonthology 1990-1992” is a collection of all the material recorded by the French band DAGON during their early years of activity. These guys had a very short life between 1990 and 1992 before their reunion in 2022. The CD contains the five tracks from the 1991 “Bound To Mutation” demo, two songs taken from the 1992 “Obscurum Per Obscurius” compilation and the 1990 “Four Paths To Lunacy” rehearsal session. First of all, I really appreciate the label’s choice to resume the original “Bound To Mutation” artwork, a killer vintage drawing that mixes a strong “Altars Of Madness” touch with the typical zombie movies imagery from the ’80s. Musically DAGON plays a solid style of Death Metal: semi-technical and ultra thrashy. The best section of this compilation is without any doubt the “Bound To Mutation” demo, an intense example of well played Death Metal that follows the Chuck Shuldiner’s legacy. DAGON’s formula pays homage to DEATH, very early PESTILENCE and SLAYER, especially for what concerns the guitarwork. In short, you won’t find any bizarre experiments here, but something true, coherent and pretty similar to the style played in that period by other french bands. To prove this, we have to say that there was a very active Death Metal scene in France between the late ’80s and the early ’90s with bands such as LOUDBLAST, MASSACRA, MUTILATED, NO RETURN, SUPURATION, MERCYLESS and CATACOMB, just to name a few. Ok, DAGON had a secondary role in this underground circle and they were not the most brutal of these bands, but for sure their Death Metal was impressive and powerful with tight riffing and a warm production (the demo was recorded professionaly by Stéphane Buriez from LOUDBLAST). Unfortunately they disbanded in 1992 after participating in the legendary “Obscurum Per Obscurius” compilation. In conclusion, if you’re into uncompromising old school Death Metal, this is an authentic little gem from the past that deserves a chance. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61561408410603, www.facebook.com/greatdanerecords
