DEAD has been active since 1991. Pretty much every Death Metal fan out there may have seen their name or at least, heard one of their songs. Because a 26 year career doesn’t go by unnoticed. This brings us to their latest album, "A Dirty Mind Is A Joy Forever", released by the (also German) F.D.A. Records label. And all I can say is that things haven’t changed that much for DEAD after all these years. Is this good or bad? Well, it depends. If you are wondering about it, yes, this sounds totally 90s and, in my opinion, it’s great! I was immediately sent back to the days of cheap B Horror movies and gore soaked albums. Oh, the good old days. And yet, I am here wondering how these guys managed to capture the sound of an era with "A Dirty Mind….". The sickness is still there and that translates into the listening experience. The production is heavy and dense. The mix is a little muddy, but clear enough to let all instruments be heard. A thick and round guitar sound along the a pummeling bass tone. The drums are crisp, yet pushed back a little in the mix, so the gurgling vocals can cut through. Now, this is a double edge blade, since some people would definitively enjoy their brand of perverse mid paced Death Metal with Grindcore outbursts (and the groovy Rock and Roll sections of their latest releases). On the other side, there’s people that may call this dated or simply not interesting enough. But for me, a classic is a classic. And DEAD has a well deserved spot right next to bands such as IMPETIGO, GENERAL SURGERY, DR SHRIKNER, (old) CARCASS, AUTOPSY and the likes. Oh, and did I say that I think the cover is brilliant? I love that vintage, yet sick feel in those old photos. I can recommend this album to any Death Metal fan. But those who enjoy a little more blood in their Death Metal and Grindcore will find "A Dirty Mind Is A Joy Forever" to be a lot more enjoyable. At least for me, it was.
