DEFACING
Spitting Savagery

Bad luck! Mistakenly my anticipation of what a Death Metal record from Chile would sound like was considerably different from “Spitting Savagery”. DEFACING (formerly: SPLATTERED EXCREMENTS – yumyum!) play brutal Death the American way. The vocals are not really froggy but still highly monotonous as long as the singer doesn’t scream like a madman (which he sometimes does and, to be honest: which I definitely prefer). Considering the fact that this band was only founded in 2001, their technical abilities are quite impressive but that’s simply what you expect from a band of this very genre. Fans of brutal Death Metal are gonna love this for sure and the band even seems to use a little more variation than the average BRODEQUIN clone. But don’t expect slam riffs all the time, either. What makes DEFACING memorable to me are the few sick and chaotic solos like on the opener, something I see as their South American Metal heritage. So there are ways to have an identity, even in brutal Death Metal. No idea why bands play cover tunes on their records, except for having a longer playing time (makes sense esp. in this very genre, right?). DEFACING come up with a solid version of CRYPTOPSY’s ‘Phobophile’ but what was wrong with the original, for heaven’s sake? Play covers on stage, not in the studio, dammit! Still: a good record for every brutal Death looney! www.xtreemmusic.com
