Why do a good part of the South American hordes have to use tonguebreaking and insanely long titles on their albums? This is not the first time I’ve asked myself the question, and will probably not be the last, as I in some weird way are drawn towards such bands and albums! DEFORMITY BR is a new acquaintance to me and this is their debut full length album after a good deal of demos and a 4 way split album. The band has good 5 tears behind them, and it can be heard that we aren’t dealing with a completely new band, they have found their niche, sound and brutality. As the 10 tracks, after the mandatory intro, is a fest of brutal and hammersmashing Death Metal. We are getting a beating with downtuned riffing delivered, often, in a blazing pace with a good deal of frantic and noisy leads in between. A tortured and agonized growl from the netherworld. Punishing drums and a bass that a bit too often is hidden a bit too low in the soundpicture – just take ‘Agony Yells’ where it has a leading role, that doesn’t make anything worse. Take the darkness from INCANTATION and IMMOLATION, the speed from the latter and the slow eerie and doomy parts from the first – add the usual Brazilian madness and no sense for bounderies and some pure grinding parts, then you have the bastard child that has become DEFORMITY BR. It is not the most original Death Metal out there, nor the most thoroughly composed music, though you can break your neck ‘banging to this, it is evil, it is brutal – it kicks some serious ass and I can’t wait to hear more from this band, or perhaps a day experience them on stage, to what I only can imagine would be a enjoyable blow to the head! www.myspace.com/deformitybrazil
