The Horror! Yes… the horror… because this is what DENIAL OF GOD are about… This Danish lot has been a part of the underground for solid 15 years to finally release its debut full length album which clocks around at one hour. The nine compositions are very varied: from the classic organ intro at the beginning, over the fast ‘The Curse Of The Witch’ with its hints of classic MAYHEM (which had their influence on Ustumallagam and his fiends anyways I would say), the accoustic mid-tro ‘The Witch – Now A Restless Spirit’ (reminding me very much of the intro on the first UNLEASHED record by the way) to ‘Cycle Of The Wolf’ with its prominent Heavy Metal influences and the epic title track which closes the album. Both soundwise and imagewise DENIAL OF GOD have always put strong emphasis on the element of dramatic "horror" or "shock" as it is present with acts like DEATH SS and MERCYFUL FATE / KING DIAMOND or MORTUARY DRAPE (to name a band that is somewhat stylistically similar). By that, I do not mean that DENIAL OF GOD do sound like these acts but the plentiful harmonious Heavy Metal overtones and the use of make-up and theatrics reveal where their roots lie. As already mentioned, the tracks on "The Horrors Of Satan" vary greatly in composition, speed and length. I am a bit at a loss of words to describe this album… if you already know DENIAL OF GOD from one of their demos or the numerous EPs you basically know what to expect. In case you have never heard of this act imagine a band combining the darkness and fast aggression of old MAYHEM with a very strong Heavy Metal influence and the horror visuals af bands like DEATH SS or MISFITS. There is not much to say about the production other than that it is pleasantly natural und "un-artificial" as it should be for this music. Anyway, where my words may fail to bring across how "The Horrors Of Satan" sounds, DENIAL OF GOD themselves may not: www.myspace.com/denialofgod.
