DESOLATION ANGELS is a British NWOBHM / Power Metal band which has released a modest repetoire since their formation in 1981. This contains two full-lengths (”Desolation Angels” in 1986 and ”While The Flame Still Burns” in 1991), three demos (”Demo 1” in 1981, ”Fury” in 1987 and ”Demo 1987” in 1989), a single in 1984 named ”Valhalia  /  Boadicea” and two EPs (”English Bastards” in 1991 and this one ”Sweeter Than Meat” in 2015). This is my first acquintance with these lads and the songs were remarkebly easy to consume. The songs are well structured despite their simple setup. What the band shows here is everything but innovative, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Many times, especially in the choruses, thanks to the hypnotising vocals of Ian ”Curly” Davies, a typical 80s feel surrounded the riffs and leads by Keith Sharp and Robin Brancher. These were steady and not over the top which also counts for the drums by Chris Takka. Kind of like the reliability of good old (school) quality. Also the bass by Clive Pearson is eminently present and full of energy. The melodies aren’t particular catchy and some riffs are repeated rather long for their own good, but by no means I’d call it boring or exhaustive. Even though the first two tracks sounded pretty much the same, in the end these five tracks were varied enough to be sustainable for multiple spins.
