No Comatose Music release without an intro? Is it like this? Don’t know, but I know that this 2009 debut release from Texas-based band ENGAGED IN MUTILATING features with ‘Steady Decline To Population Zero’ an intro not really necessary, though acceptable with its playing time of 1:25 minutes. Already with the 2nd song ‘Process Of Human Extinction’ you get the full story what the music of ENGAED IN MUTILATING is all about: blasting hyper speed Death Metal with ultra-deep growls. The ultra-deep growls are usually not my cup of tea, here on the other hand they work just brilliant. The rest, especially the unstructured riffs and the too monotonous blasting drums can’t convince me that much. This band has potential which is easy to recognize, nevertheless I mostly have the impression that they want to be brutal for brutal’s sake. The label describes the band to be the right thing for fans of DECREPIT BIRTH, PUTRILAGE and GORGUTS and yeah, why not. Fact is that the band offers too less of own ideas and even borrowed ideas don’t work that well, which you can hear on the hidden track (PESTILENCE’s ‘Out Of The Body’). A great choice for a cover version, but guys, that interpretation don’t work that good. ENGAGED IN MUTILATING’s music might work just great on a live concert – on a CD it’s too little offered for the moment. As this is a release from 2009 the chances are quite good to hear something new from them soon and perhaps they progressed in the way we want to see them: offering the brutal unique, fast and technical Death Metal they get praised in the labels info sheet.
