FONOPS
Illumination

These guys from Slovakia have been playing together for a couple of years already. “Illumination” is their first official recording, though. Their aim is to get attention from some label. Let’s see if this works out. I’d describe their style as sort of Black Metal. The opener comes with a rather odd lead theme that gives the impression the band got together only yesterday. But that’s only the theme. It’s annoying at times – depending on the mood you’re in. Most of the time the music corresponds with our listening habits, though. There are typical (melodic) Black Metal parts with a nice punky edge at times. This shows that FONOPS know how to handle their instruments. It’s just that at times one might doubt so (e.g. ‘Pandemonium’). I have come to the conclusion that those moments are just a different (Slovakian?) approach to music. Some other rather strange elements like a melody that reminds me of western tunes (on ‘Hidden Scars’) for example supports the impression that FONOPS just isn’t your everyday Black Metal copycat. It’s just a rather unusual way of progressive (?) Black Metal, so to say. This one is for people into weird-but-not-that-weird sounds. A small label might think this recording suitable indeed. The production is quite strong anyway. So if you’re looking for some exotic stuff that doesn’t ask too much of your imagination and musical knowledge.
