In The Image Of Man

Russian Black Metal act FORGOT just unleashed their 4th album via Assault Records. Since Black Metal is not one of my main interests, I haven’t heard any of their previous releases. But let me tell you, this album displays a perfect example of second generation Black Metal. Production wise, it follows every aspect of the originators of the sub-genre: a thin, yet clear guitar tone, punchy drums, solid bass guitar (kinda buried in the mix) and high-pitched raspy vocals that make your soul cringe. Although "In The Image Of Man" evokes that specific era, it manages to retain one’s attention. The short timing of the songs keep you interested and they never become boring. Actually, the album is gone before you realize it. FORGOT are not inventing the style. This album is firmly rooted in the mid 90s without being a copy of other bands. Everything is there. Great melodic lines à la DISSECTION, hateful screams à la BURZUM and full speed tremolo riffs à la old DARKTHRONE. Even the mix has that same style, where the vocals are not that present just adding to the whole atmosphere. I really liked ‘After The Humans’, a clean, yet haunting song that slows the pace down right before the album ends with a 2 song blast. Music made with passion and played fiercely. It is not a ground-breaking release. But a good one for the fans of the style. Contact the band and their label here: www.assault-crew.net, www.assavlt.bandcamp.com
