Black Metal duo FORMLESS DEVOTION hails from Cape Town, South Africa. And "Sparks Of Separation" is their debut album and first proper recording, since it seems they haven’t released anything prior to it. And after reading all the available info I could get, I sat down to listen, since I was really intrigued by the song titles and concept. The album lists 7 songs. 3 of them are instrumental passages with weird sound fx over keyboard pads. And, although I don’t like intros, outros and these kind of parts, they actually contribute to the album’s atmosphere. FORMLESS DEVOTION’s musical aesthetics come from bands such as old BEHEMOTH and DEUS IGNOTUS to name two of them. But they also incorporate their ideas and style with some slower and acoustic parts that add a lot to the listening experience. "Sparks Of Separation" is a solid album. It’s not a break through release, but fans of aforementioned bands and people who are interested in some ritualesque Black Metal with a twist should definitively check this one out.
