Four years after their previous full-length, FRIGHTFUL returns with their latest piece of Death / Thrash Metal, “What Lies Ahead”, released in February 2025 through Godz Ov War Productions. This album emerges from the underground, taking everything they’ve built since their early EPs and demo, putting everything together into a weapon that explodes around your ears. You can tell right from the very first moment that they’ve gone deep in their sound, creating this tension that makes a perfect deal here. Starting with ‘Cloaked By Nothingness’, FRIGHTFUL is immediately announcing that you will face something tense here. The vocals are raw and aggressive but controlled, displaying not only brutality but also intent, giving weight to this album. Jumping around, I’d like to highlight a track like ‘What Lies Ahead’, which offers a quiet moment at first with those guitars playing these haunting arpeggios right before the atrocity begins. Then, we have ‘No Fear’, my favorite track on the album. A track that immediately hits a primal nerve deep inside. Pure instinct. Heavy, infectious. I’d say that with “What Lies Ahead”, FRIGHTFUL builds on everything they’ve done up to this point. From their early days releasing EPs like “Born After Burial” (their very first release from 2017) or “Cannibalistic Rites” (from 2018) to the raw power of their first full-length “Spectral Creator” (from 2021), this album feels like reaching their highest level as a band. And although the album is not redefining the genre it’s here to remind you why this genre endures, that this malevolent combination of speed, aggression and raw emotion still hits as hard today as it ever has. “What Lies Ahead” is about perseverance while staying true to the underground. Devastating album! Solid, honest and absolutely worth your time. “What Lies Ahead” is just Metal the way it’s supposed to be: loud, fierce and straight from the gut.
